That there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and maybe that’s just naive hope, but that’s honestly what I need. At times, it can feel like we may never get out of these rooms or houses, both metaphorically and literally, but lately I’ve been feeling like something is changing. This is causing many of us to look inward at who we are and what we want from life while evaluating how we can make sure everything fits in the right place, compartmentalizing to survive. We have spent a year or more inside away from family, friends, coworkers, and routines. I feel like right now feeling stuck is all we know. In the realization, I felt jipped all of those years before because I only heard this song in the context of romantic love. In “Closer,” Goapele speaks of the freedom of reaching a new place in life after feeling stuck, a feeling that right now many may relate to. This was the first track on Goapele’s debut album Even Closer that released in 2002. The other day while scrolling, like many times in lockdown, I heard a song that in some ways shaped multiple movies of my childhood, “ Closer,” by Goapele.
